# What This Bill Does

Right now, the Coast Guard's top leader—the Commandant—doesn't have an official seat at the table with the highest-ranking military officers in the country. This bill would change that by giving the Commandant a permanent spot on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which is basically the group of senior military leaders who advise the President on defense matters and help coordinate military strategy.

Currently, the Joint Chiefs of Staff includes the heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Space Force. The Coast Guard, even though it's a military service, has been left out of this group. This bill would officially add the Commandant of the Coast Guard to that list, putting them on equal footing with the other military service leaders. It also opens the door for the Coast Guard Commandant to potentially become the Chairman or Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs—the top leadership positions—something that wasn't possible before.

The practical effect is that Coast Guard concerns and expertise would now be directly represented in the highest-level military decision-making conversations. The Coast Guard handles everything from border security and drug interdiction to search and rescue operations and protecting ports, so having their voice in these discussions could influence how the military approaches homeland security and coastal defense issues. The bill also requires the Commandant to keep the Secretary of the department overseeing the Coast Guard informed about military decisions that affect their responsibilities, ensuring the Coast Guard doesn't get left out of the loop on important matters.

To amend title 10, United States Code, to provide for the membership of the Commandant of the Coast Guard on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

 <p>This bill adds the Commandant of the Coast Guard as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Commandant must keep the department under which the Coast Guard is operating (either the Department of Homeland Security or the Department of the Navy) fully informed of significant military operations affecting the duties and responsibilities of such departments.</p>
