# Financial Technology Protection Act of 2025: What It Actually Does

This bill creates a new government task force focused on stopping terrorists, criminals, and hostile foreign governments from using digital money and cryptocurrency to hide their activities and evade sanctions. The working group will bring together officials from the Treasury Department, FBI, DEA, Secret Service, State Department, and other agencies, along with representatives from cryptocurrency companies, banks, and privacy advocates to study how bad actors are exploiting digital financial technologies and recommend new laws or regulations to stop them.

The core problem the bill is trying to address is that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology make it easier for dangerous actors to move money across borders without detection. Terrorists can fund operations, drug cartels can launder money, and countries under sanctions can conduct business they're not supposed to. The working group will spend up to four years researching these threats and developing solutions. They'll produce annual reports to Congress and the Treasury Department explaining what they've learned and proposing new rules or legislation to close these loopholes.

Additionally, the bill requires the President and Treasury Secretary to submit a detailed report within six months outlining how digital assets are being misused and what strategy the U.S. should adopt to prevent it. This report will be made public so Americans can see what the government has discovered. Two years later, the Treasury Secretary must brief Congress on how well the strategy is working.

For most people, this bill won't directly change anything immediately. However, it could eventually lead to stricter regulations on cryptocurrency exchanges and digital wallet services, potentially making it harder to use these technologies anonymously but also making the financial system safer from criminal and terrorist financing.

Financial Technology Protection Act of 2025 This bill establishes the Independent Financial Technology Working Group to Combat Terrorism and Illicit Financing. The working group must study and report on terrorist and illicit use of digital assets and other related emerging technologies and develop proposals to improve anti-money laundering and counterterrorist financing efforts.The working group terminates four years after the bill's enactment or after the working group completes any ongoing activities, whichever is later.In addition, the Department of the Treasury must (1) report on the potential use of digital assets and other emerging technologies by states, nonstate actors, and terrorist groups for the purpose of evading sanctions to threaten the national security of the United States; and (2) describe a strategy to mitigate and prevent this usage.&nbsp;
