# Armenian Genocide Education Act: What It Does

This bill directs the Library of Congress to create and run a national program focused on teaching Americans about the Armenian Genocide—the systematic killing, displacement, and cultural destruction of Armenian, Greek, Assyrian, and other Christian populations by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923. The program aims to increase awareness about this historical event and help prevent genocide denial and distortion, particularly online where false claims about what happened continue to spread.

The Library of Congress will develop educational materials, training programs, and online resources that schools can use to teach students about the Armenian Genocide. This includes creating lesson plans, organizing teacher training workshops, and establishing a fellowship program to develop educators who specialize in this subject. The bill also sets up a dedicated section on the Library of Congress website where teachers and students can access free educational resources and best practices for teaching about the genocide. Schools and educational organizations that don't currently offer Armenian Genocide education will be prioritized to participate in the program and receive support.

The bill is funded through two sources: Congress can appropriate up to $2 million per year for five years starting in 2026, and the Library of Congress can also accept private donations specifically designated for this program. The Librarian of Congress must submit annual reports to Congress describing what activities have been carried out. Essentially, this creates a federally supported educational initiative to ensure accurate historical information about the Armenian Genocide reaches American classrooms and counters misinformation about these events.
