# Understanding the PFAS Registry Act of 2021

This bill creates a tracking system for military members and veterans who may have been exposed to harmful chemicals called PFAS. These chemicals come from firefighting foam (called AFFF) that the military has used on bases for decades. The foam was designed to put out fuel fires quickly, but it contains PFAS—chemicals that don't break down in the environment and can accumulate in people's bodies. The bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to set up and maintain a registry where eligible service members can register and have their health monitored over time.

Here's what this means in practical terms: if you served on a military base where this firefighting foam was used, you can voluntarily sign up for the registry. Once registered, the VA will keep track of your health information related to PFAS exposure and notify you about new medical developments or treatments. The VA also has to launch a public information campaign to let people know the registry exists and how to join it. This is important because PFAS exposure has been linked to various health problems, and having a registry helps doctors and researchers understand the full scope of the problem and develop better ways to help affected veterans.

The bill also requires the VA to report back to Congress within two years and again within five years about what they've learned from the registry. These reports will include recommendations on how to better help veterans with PFAS-related health issues. Additionally, every five years the VA will review whether other chemicals from military bases should be added to the registry. The whole system is designed to ensure that service members who were exposed to these chemicals aren't forgotten and can get the medical attention and support they need.

PFAS Registry Act of 2021 This bill directs the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to establish a registry for current or past members of the Armed Forces who may have been exposed to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances due to the environmental release of aqueous film-forming foam at a military installation or other Department of Defense (DOD) location. Additionally, the VA must consult with DOD and the Environmental Protection Agency to make recommendations for additional chemicals that should be included in the registry.
