# Flight Education Access Act: What It Means for Pilot Training Students

This bill makes it easier for students pursuing commercial pilot training to borrow federal student loans by significantly raising the borrowing limits for flight education programs. Right now, students in pilot training programs are stuck with the same loan limits as other college students, which often isn't enough to cover the expensive costs of flight training. This bill creates special, higher loan limits just for students enrolled in accredited undergraduate flight programs that train pilots to earn commercial pilot certificates.

The new loan limits vary depending on whether you're classified as a dependent or independent student and how far along you are in your program. For example, a dependent student in their first year of flight training could borrow up to $20,500 per year (compared to standard student loan limits), while an independent student could borrow up to $24,500. These limits increase as students progress through their programs—reaching $31,500 to $35,500 annually for dependent and independent students in their second year. Over the entire program, dependent students could borrow up to $111,000 total, while independent students could borrow up to $137,500. The bill also allows students to take out subsidized loans (where the government pays interest while you're in school) in addition to unsubsidized loans, which wasn't previously an option for flight students.

To make sure this program works well, schools offering these flight programs must meet accreditation standards and follow Federal Aviation Administration guidelines. After three years, programs must maintain at least a 70 percent completion rate to keep offering these higher loan limits to their students. Schools will also have to collect and report data on student enrollment, completion rates, and demographic information so Congress can monitor whether the program is actually helping students succeed. The bill requires the Government Accountability Office to review how well the program is working two years after it takes effect and report back to Congress with recommendations.
