# Feed Hungry Veterans Act of 2023

This bill makes it easier for disabled veterans to qualify for food assistance through the SNAP program (commonly known as food stamps). Right now, only veterans with very severe disabilities can get this help. The bill expands who qualifies by lowering the disability rating threshold and adding new categories of veterans who can receive benefits.

Currently, disabled veterans need to have a single service-connected disability rated at 100 percent to automatically qualify for food assistance. The new bill would let veterans qualify if they have a disability rated at 60 percent or higher, or if they have multiple disabilities that add up to 70 percent or higher (with at least one being 40 percent or higher). The bill also adds two new groups: veterans who are classified as "catastrophically disabled" and younger veterans receiving a military pension due to disability. These changes mean thousands more disabled veterans who are struggling financially could get help putting food on the table.

The practical impact is straightforward—disabled veterans who fall just short of the current requirements would no longer have to choose between paying for food and paying other bills. A veteran with a 60 percent disability rating from service-related injuries, for example, could now access SNAP benefits to help feed their family. The bill takes effect on October 1, 2023, so eligible veterans could start applying for these benefits at that point. This is particularly important because many disabled veterans live on fixed incomes from disability payments and struggle with food insecurity.
