# The KO Cancer Act: What It Does

Cancer kills about one in every four Americans, and this bill is designed to fight back by giving the National Cancer Institute significantly more money to research new treatments and cures. Specifically, the bill would add 25 percent extra funding to the National Cancer Institute's budget every year from 2026 through 2030. To put that in perspective, if the institute received about $6 billion in 2022, this bill would add roughly $1.5 billion annually on top of whatever funding it already gets. That money would be specifically dedicated to cancer research and would stay available to spend until it's used up, rather than disappearing at the end of each year.

The bill also addresses a real problem that cancer patients face: shortages of cancer drugs. The government would be required to study why these shortages happen—whether it's because companies find it unprofitable to make certain drugs, supply chain problems, delays in getting FDA approval, or a lack of generic versions of expensive medications. Within a year, the Health and Human Services Department would report back to Congress with their findings and recommendations for fixing the problem.

For patients and their families, this could mean better access to cancer treatments down the road and potentially new breakthroughs in fighting the disease. The increased research funding could lead to more effective therapies and cures, while the drug shortage study aims to ensure that once treatments are developed, people can actually get them. The bill essentially says that given how many Americans die from cancer each year, the government should invest more resources in solving this problem.
