# Understanding the School Violence Prevention Act

This bill creates a new federal grant program designed to help schools and communities in high-violence areas prevent gun violence among young people. The federal government would provide money to partnerships between schools and local nonprofits to run violence prevention programs specifically targeting youth who are at highest risk of being involved in gun violence.

The program would focus on schools in cities and regions that have experienced serious violence problems. To qualify for funding, an area needs to have experienced at least 35 homicides per year over the past few years, or 20 homicides with a rate double the national average, or show other signs of high youth violence like high arrest rates for violent crimes. Schools and nonprofits would work together to design programs that help at-risk young people develop better emotional skills, connect with mentors and counselors, heal from trauma, and build stronger community ties. The programs would need to be culturally sensitive and based on what research shows actually works.

The bill would provide $25 million per year from 2025 through 2031 to fund these programs across different regions of the country. Each grant would last five years and could be renewed. Schools receiving money would need to track whether their programs are working—measuring things like graduation rates, employment, and whether young people are staying out of the criminal justice system. Independent researchers would also evaluate the programs and share what works best with the public.

Essentially, this is a targeted investment in violence prevention services for schools in communities struggling with gun violence, combining school-based support with community partnerships to help young people at highest risk find alternatives to violence.
