# Safe Schools and Communities Act of 2025

This bill creates a federal grant program that gives money to local school districts to train teachers and staff about serious safety threats facing students. The Department of Education will distribute these grants on a competitive basis, meaning school districts have to apply and explain how they'll use the funds.

The money schools receive must be spent on training school employees who regularly interact with students. This training covers four main topics: recognizing signs of human trafficking and knowing how to respond, understanding the dangers of fentanyl and drug abuse, identifying gang activity and intervention strategies, and connecting students with local community resources that can help. Schools can also use the grant money to buy educational materials, pay instructors, and cover other costs associated with running these training programs.

Beyond just training, schools can use the grants to implement actual prevention programs in their buildings. This could mean bringing in specialized curriculum about human trafficking, adding fentanyl and drug abuse prevention lessons to their regular instruction, or starting gang prevention and education programs. The bill essentially gives schools flexibility to choose which of these approaches—or combination of approaches—makes the most sense for their community's needs.

The bill funds this program by redirecting money that was previously designated for other purposes under existing education law. Schools interested in these grants will need to submit applications to the Department of Education within 120 days of the law passing, explaining what they plan to do with the funding and how it will help keep their students safer.
