# What the Ban Corporate PACs Act Actually Does

Right now, for-profit corporations can set up special funds called PACs (Political Action Committees) to collect money from their employees and use it to support political candidates and causes. This bill would ban that practice. Going forward, only nonprofit organizations—like charities, unions, and advocacy groups—would be allowed to create these political funds. For-profit companies like Apple, Walmart, or any regular business corporation would no longer be able to do this.

The bill also changes who can be asked to contribute to these political funds. Currently, corporations can solicit money from stockholders and employees. Under this new law, only executives and administrative staff could be asked to contribute. Regular employees and shareholders would be off-limits. Any corporate PACs that already exist when this law takes effect would have one year to shut down and give out all their remaining money. After that transition period, they'd simply cease to exist. The bill would take effect immediately upon passage, so the clock would start ticking right away for existing corporate political funds to wind down their operations.
