# National Guard and Reserve Student Loan Fairness Act

This bill helps members of the National Guard and military reserves get credit toward loan forgiveness for their military service. Right now, the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program allows people who work in public service jobs to have their federal student loans forgiven after making 120 qualifying monthly payments. The problem is that National Guard and Reserve members often don't work full-time in traditional public service jobs—they serve part-time while holding other employment—so their military service doesn't count toward those 120 payments, even though they're serving their country.

The bill fixes this by letting Guard and Reserve members count their years of military service as qualifying payments toward loan forgiveness. Here's how it works: if a Guard or Reserve member completes a full year of service (earning at least 80 retirement points in that year), each month of that year counts as a qualifying payment, as long as they made an actual student loan payment that month. If they complete a partial year of service (earning 50-79 points), up to six months count. The key is that these months get credited even if the person wasn't working full-time in a public service job at the time—their military service itself makes them eligible.

To make this happen automatically, the bill requires the Department of Defense and Department of Education to share data and match Guard and Reserve members' military records with their student loan accounts. This means eligible service members won't have to do anything themselves—the government will identify who qualifies and apply the credit without requiring them to submit paperwork or take action. The goal is to recognize military service as a form of public service and make sure these part-time soldiers aren't penalized for not having traditional full-time public sector jobs.
