# Understanding the PRICE Act

The PRICE Act (Protect and Respect ICE Act) makes it a more serious crime to physically assault, resist, or interfere with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers or employees while they're doing their jobs. Right now, there are already federal laws that punish people for attacking or obstructing federal officers, but this bill specifically targets ICE and makes the penalties much harsher for crimes against them.

Here's what changes: If someone is convicted of assaulting or resisting an ICE officer under current law, they face a certain maximum prison sentence and fine. Under this bill, those maximum penalties would be doubled. So if the current maximum sentence is five years in prison, it would become ten years. The fines would increase proportionally as well. This applies specifically to incidents involving ICE officers and employees, not other federal agents.

In practical terms, this means people who physically attack ICE officers, try to prevent them from doing their work, or resist during an enforcement action would face significantly longer prison sentences if convicted. The bill doesn't create any new crimes—it just makes existing crimes against ICE workers carry much steeper consequences. This could affect anyone involved in confrontations with ICE during immigration enforcement operations, whether they're directly resisting an officer or physically interfering with an enforcement action.
