This bill requires middle and high schools across the country to develop and implement comprehensive suicide prevention programs. Within seven months of the bill becoming law, the Secretary of Education must create rules that all schools receiving federal funding must follow. The federal government would support schools in meeting these requirements by providing technical assistance and guidelines, while also monitoring whether schools are actually following through. Schools would be expected to give feedback on what's working and what isn't, so the rules can be improved over time. Essentially, this bill aims to make suicide prevention a standard part of how schools operate, similar to how they handle fire drills or other safety protocols.
