# Understanding the Targeting Online Sales of Fentanyl Act

This bill asks the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which is Congress's independent watchdog agency, to investigate how dangerous drugs like fentanyl, other synthetic opioids, and methamphetamine are being sold online. The GAO will spend about a year studying this problem and then report back to Congress with what they find. Third, the GAO will evaluate what federal agencies are currently doing to fight online drug sales, including whether different agencies are working together effectively and whether they have enough resources and personnel to do the job properly.

The investigation will also examine what online platforms and service providers are doing to prevent drug sales on their sites. This includes looking at whether they use technology like artificial intelligence to detect illegal activity, how they punish users who sell drugs, and how often they report suspected drug dealers to law enforcement. Finally, the GAO will track what happens when companies do report suspected drug sales to the government—how many reports get investigated, how many lead to arrests or convictions, and whether the information gets shared with local police and prosecutors who might also pursue cases.

Essentially, this bill is a fact-finding mission. It won't directly change anyone's life immediately, but the information gathered could lead to new laws or policies down the road aimed at making it harder for drug dealers to operate online and easier for law enforcement to catch them.
