Think of ADAS as the technology that helps cars stay in lanes, apply brakes automatically, or maintain safe distances from other vehicles.

Right now, when people modify their cars—like changing tire sizes, lowering the suspension, or adjusting ride height—they might accidentally disable or damage these safety systems without realizing it. This bill says NHTSA needs to establish rules about what modifications are safe and what tolerances (acceptable ranges of change) won't interfere with ADAS functionality. The guidelines will cover things like tire and wheel dimensions, suspension height, sensor positioning, and camera alignment.

The bill also requires manufacturers to share technical information about their vehicles' sensitivity to modifications within 30 days of releasing a new model. It establishes a process for repair shops and car owners to verify that ADAS systems are working properly after any modifications or repairs. The guidelines will apply to all passenger vehicles with ADAS features starting with the 2028 model year. Car manufacturers who don't follow these guidelines can face civil penalties.
