At the same time, the area is home to the Indiana Dunes, one of the most ecologically diverse parks in the National Park System. The region also represents the diverse immigrant and working-class communities that built America's industries. Today, it remains the nation's leading steel-producing region.

By designating this as a National Heritage Area, the bill creates a framework for local communities, organizations, and government agencies to work together on conservation, education, and tourism. A local group called the Calumet Heritage Partnership will coordinate these efforts. The federal government will provide support for up to 15 years, during which time local leaders must develop a management plan. Essentially, this bill gives the Calumet region official recognition and resources to help preserve its industrial heritage, protect its natural areas, and tell the story of the people and industries that shaped it.
