# The KO Cancer Act: What It Does

The KO Cancer Act is designed to boost funding for cancer research by giving the National Cancer Institute significantly more money to work with. Specifically, the bill would provide an additional 25 percent increase to the National Cancer Institute's budget every year from 2024 through 2028. To put this in perspective, if the institute received $6 billion in 2022, this bill would add roughly $1.5 billion annually on top of whatever funding it already receives. This extra money would be specifically dedicated to conducting and supporting cancer research, with no time limit on how long the institute can use it.

The reasoning behind this increase is straightforward: cancer kills a lot of people, but the federal government hasn't been funding cancer research at a level that matches how serious the problem is. Beyond the funding boost, the bill also requires the Food and Drug Administration to investigate why cancer drugs are sometimes in short supply. The government would study whether shortages happen because of economic reasons, problems in the supply chain, delays in developing or approving new drugs, or a lack of generic and cheaper alternative versions of cancer medications. Within a year, the FDA would report back to Congress with their findings and recommendations for fixing these shortage problems.
