# PFAS Accountability Act of 2024: What It Means for You

PFAS are human-made chemicals found in thousands of everyday products—nonstick cookware, water-resistant clothing, food packaging, and firefighting foam. The problem is that these chemicals don't break down in the environment or in our bodies. The CDC has detected PFAS in the blood of nearly all Americans tested, and at least 200 million people have PFAS in their drinking water. Studies link even low-level PFAS exposure to serious health problems including cancer, reproductive harm, and weakened immune systems. Despite this, people who get sick from PFAS exposure currently have no way to sue the companies responsible for making or releasing these chemicals into the environment.

This bill creates a federal legal right for people significantly exposed to PFAS to sue the manufacturers and companies that made these chemicals. If you can show you were exposed to PFAS for at least a year through contaminated water, soil, or air near a manufacturing facility, or if blood tests confirm PFAS in your body, you could potentially bring a lawsuit. The bill makes it easier to prove exposure by creating a legal presumption—once you demonstrate the company made the PFAS and it was released where you lived or worked, the burden shifts to the company to prove you weren't actually exposed.

The main remedy available through this bill is "medical monitoring," which means companies would have to pay for regular health screenings and medical tests for affected people to catch PFAS-related diseases early. This shifts the cost of monitoring from individuals to the responsible companies. The bill also encourages courts to order independent research into PFAS health effects when scientific data is lacking, which could help fill gaps in what we know about these chemicals' dangers. Importantly, this federal law doesn't prevent people from also pursuing lawsuits under state laws, so it adds another avenue for accountability rather than replacing existing options.
