The bill expands the Forest Service's authority to not just acquire land, but also manage it actively. The bill allows money spent on land purchases to also be used for ongoing management activities like maintaining forest health, preventing wildfires, protecting water quality, and preserving culturally important sites. Importantly, the Forest Service can now transfer money and land to the Washoe Tribe and other partners so they can manage these lands themselves. Every year, the Forest Service must create a spending plan by March 15th that prioritizes projects based on environmental goals, measurable outcomes, and community support. The bill ensures that any money given to the Washoe Tribe or local partners counts as matching funds for other federal programs, helping them access additional resources.
