# Fair Play for Women Act: What You Need to Know

This bill aims to close the gap between men's and women's sports opportunities and funding at colleges and universities. Right now, women athletes face significant disadvantages—colleges spend less money on women's sports, provide fewer scholarships, and offer fewer participation opportunities overall. For example, women receive $240 million less annually in athletic scholarships compared to men, and for every dollar spent on recruiting for men's sports, colleges only spend 58 cents for women's sports. The bill targets these inequities by holding athletic organizations accountable and requiring much more detailed public reporting about how money and opportunities are distributed.

The law creates two main changes. First, it gives individual athletes and colleges the power to sue athletic associations (like the NCAA) if they discriminate against women through their rules, which sports they sponsor, where competitions are held, or how they distribute money and benefits. Athletes could recover damages for emotional distress and other harms. Second, the bill requires colleges to publicly report detailed information about their athletic programs, broken down by men's and women's sports. This includes exact numbers of athletes on each team, scholarship amounts, coaching salaries, revenues, and expenses. Colleges must also report how many male practice players are on women's teams—a practice that inflates women's participation numbers without actually giving women more opportunities.

These requirements make it much harder for colleges to hide gender inequities. By publishing searchable data online by February each year, the government and the public can see exactly where the gaps are. The federal government will also publish reports every two years analyzing this data to identify trends and problems. Additionally, athletic associations must train their employees annually about these new rules and women's rights. While this bill doesn't automatically create new women's sports teams or guarantee equal funding, it shines a light on inequality and gives athletes legal tools to fight discrimination, which could pressure colleges to make real changes.
