# Understanding the VETS Safe Travel Act

This bill makes it easier for severely injured or disabled veterans to get through airport security by giving them free access to TSA PreCheck, a program that speeds up the screening process. Right now, PreCheck costs money and requires an application, but under this bill, eligible veterans wouldn't have to pay anything or go through the normal application process.

The bill specifically targets veterans who have lost a limb, become paralyzed, or gone blind as a result of their service, and who now use wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, or other mobility devices. These veterans must be enrolled in the VA's healthcare system to qualify. The practical benefit is significant: instead of going through standard airport security lines where they might face delays or uncomfortable procedures, these veterans would get expedited screening that's designed to be faster and less intrusive. This matters because airport security can be particularly challenging for people with mobility issues—removing shoes, going through scanners, and standing in long lines can be painful or difficult.

The bill requires the TSA and Department of Veterans Affairs to work together to set up the system within one year and then report back to Congress on how it's working. The agencies also have to reach out to disabled veterans to make sure they know about this benefit and other TSA programs designed to help people with disabilities travel more easily. Essentially, this is recognition that veterans who sacrificed their mobility in service deserve a smoother travel experience when they fly.

VETS Safe Travel Act

Veterans Expedited TSA Screening Safe Travel Act or the VETS Safe Travel ActThis bill makes certain veterans eligible for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck Program at no cost if they meet the program's background check and security requirements.Veterans who are eligible for this fee waiver are those who are in the patient enrollment system of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and require the use of a wheelchair, prosthetic limb, or other assistive device to aid with mobility due to (1) loss, or loss of use, of a limb; (2) full or partial paralyzation; or (3) permanent blindness.The VA and the TSA must develop and implement a process under which eligible veterans may receive the PreCheck Program benefit.&nbsp;Further, the VA and the TSA must develop and implement a process to provide disabled veterans with effective outreach about TSA programs that are designed to improve the screening process for passengers with disabilities.
