# College Employment Accountability Act: What It Actually Does

This bill creates a new requirement for colleges and universities that want to receive federal funding: they must use a system called E-Verify to check that all their employees are legally allowed to work in the United States. If a college is caught employing someone who doesn't have legal work authorization, the college would lose access to federal student aid money and other federal funding it receives.

Here's what this means in practical terms. Every college that participates in federal student aid programs (which is basically all of them, since students use federal loans and grants to pay tuition) would be required to run all their employees—from professors to cafeteria workers to administrative staff—through E-Verify before hiring them. E-Verify is an online system run by the Department of Homeland Security that checks whether someone's Social Security number and identity documents match government records. If a college fails to use E-Verify or is found to have hired someone without legal work authorization, it would be cut off from federal funding. This would be devastating for most colleges since federal student aid dollars flow directly to institutions through student tuition payments.

The bill also sets up a monitoring system where the Department of Homeland Security checks every six months whether colleges are actually using E-Verify, and they have to notify the Department of Education within 10 days if they find a college isn't complying or has hired unauthorized workers. For students, this could matter if their college loses federal funding and has to cut programs or raise tuition. For college employees, it means more extensive background checking before they can be hired. For colleges themselves, it means adding E-Verify compliance to their hiring processes or facing the loss of federal funding that supports their operations and student aid programs.
