This bill creates a new federal grant program that reimburses state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement agencies for the extra costs they incur protecting certain high-profile individuals at their private homes and offices. When the Secret Service designates someone who needs protection (like former presidents, vice presidents, and their families), local police often have to provide additional security around those properties. This bill says the federal government will pay those agencies back for those extra expenses—but only for costs that go beyond what they'd normally spend on regular policing. The money can cover things like overtime pay for officers assigned to protection duty and specialized equipment needed specifically for that protection work. The program is limited to protecting people while they're actually at the property or traveling to and from it. The bill authorizes $61 million per year for three years (2026-2028) to fund these reimbursements. To make sure the money is spent properly, the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General will audit the program every year and report back to Congress, and the department will also submit annual reports showing which agencies got money, how much they received, and what they spent it on.
