# Clean Water Standards for PFAS Act of 2024

This bill tackles a growing water pollution problem by requiring the Environmental Protection Agency to set strict limits on "forever chemicals" called PFAS that contaminate drinking water and waterways across the country. PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances—chemicals used in countless products like non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing, food packaging, and firefighting foam. The problem is that these chemicals don't break down in the environment or in your body, which is why they're called "forever chemicals." They've been found in the blood of most Americans and in water supplies nationwide, and studies link them to serious health problems including cancer, liver damage, and immune system issues.

The bill sets specific deadlines for the EPA to establish water quality standards and pollution limits for industries that discharge PFAS into water. Starting in 2025, the EPA must create discharge limits for chemical manufacturers, metal finishing plants, and electroplating facilities. By 2026 and 2027, textile mills, landfills, leather tanning operations, paint manufacturers, and plastics companies must also meet new standards. The EPA is also required to start monitoring PFAS pollution from airports, paper mills, and electronics manufacturers to determine if they need limits too. These requirements mean that factories and facilities will have to invest in new treatment technology to remove PFAS before releasing water back into the environment.

The bill also provides funding to help cities and towns upgrade their water treatment systems to remove PFAS. It allocates $200 million over five years for grants to publicly owned water treatment plants to improve their ability to filter out these chemicals and identify local sources of contamination. For everyday people, this means the EPA will be working to reduce PFAS in your tap water and local waterways, though it will take several years for all the new standards to take effect. The downside is that these requirements will likely increase costs for businesses and potentially for consumers, though supporters argue the health benefits far outweigh the expenses.
