# Student Veteran Debt Relief Act of 2024

This bill makes it easier for veterans and military families to avoid being stuck with debt when the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) makes mistakes with their education benefits. Right now, if the VA overpays someone's education benefits—meaning they send too much money—that person can be forced to pay it all back, even if the mistake wasn't their fault. This bill changes that by protecting veterans and eligible family members from having to repay money when the VA or Department of Defense caused the error.

The bill creates two main protections. First, if the VA made an error determining someone's eligibility for education benefits, or if the Department of Defense gave the VA wrong information, then the overpayment doesn't become a debt that needs to be repaid. Second, if someone would lose the ability to continue their education because of an overpayment debt, the VA must first check if the debt qualifies for a hardship waiver before trying to collect. If the VA can't recover the money through a hardship waiver, they have to work out a payment plan with the veteran instead of demanding immediate repayment.

There's also a time limit built in: the VA can only try to recover overpayments that happened after January 5, 2021, and they have to identify and notify the school within ten years of when the overpayment occurred. This prevents the VA from suddenly coming after veterans years later for old mistakes. Overall, the bill aims to reduce the financial burden on student veterans when administrative errors happen, allowing them to focus on their education rather than scrambling to repay money they shouldn't have received in the first place.
