# Public Land Renewable Energy Development Act of 2024

This bill aims to speed up and expand renewable energy development on federal public lands by setting higher production goals and streamlining the planning process for solar, wind, and geothermal projects.

The bill increases the national target for renewable energy production on federal lands from 25 gigawatts by 2025 to 60 gigawatts by the end of 2030—more than doubling the previous goal. To make this happen, the government must update its planning documents and identify specific areas where renewable energy companies can more easily build projects. The bill creates "priority areas" where applications for wind, solar, and geothermal projects get faster approval, while also establishing "exclusion areas" where development won't be allowed to protect sensitive environments, wildlife habitats, water resources, and cultural sites. The government must review and update these designations at least every ten years, and more frequently if it looks like the renewable energy targets won't be met.

The bill requires the Department of Interior to finalize updated environmental impact statements for solar energy within 18 months and to review wind energy planning within a year. It also allows energy storage projects—like battery systems that store power from solar and wind farms—to be built alongside renewable energy installations. Importantly, the bill tries to balance renewable energy development with other uses of public land, requiring the government to consider impacts on wildlife, endangered species, recreation, and tribal lands when deciding where projects can go.
