This bill tries to fix that by making it easier for people to plan ahead and for healthcare providers to have these important conversations.

The bill has two main focuses. First, it creates a nationwide public education campaign to teach people about advance care planning—basically, the process of deciding what medical treatments you do or don't want and putting those wishes in writing. The campaign will use TV, social media, and other channels to reach people from different backgrounds and languages. It will explain the importance of talking to family members and doctors about your healthcare wishes, and it will promote tools like living wills and healthcare power of attorney documents that let you name someone to make medical decisions for you if you can't. This campaign will run for at least five years.

Second, the bill focuses on training healthcare providers to have better conversations about end-of-life care. It creates a website to help doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers understand the laws around advance directives and learn best practices for discussing serious illness with patients. It also establishes a pilot program that gives grants to medical schools, nursing schools, and other healthcare training programs to make sure their students learn about palliative care and end-of-life planning before they start treating patients. Additionally, the bill makes it easier for Medicare patients to use video calls with doctors when discussing hospice care, removing some of the barriers that currently exist.
