He continued working at his hospital anyway and tragically caught COVID-19 himself, dying in February 2020. Before his death, he spoke out about how the Chinese government should have been more transparent and open about the outbreak from the beginning.

If this bill passes, Congress would award Dr. Li Wenliang a Congressional Gold Medal—one of the highest honors the United States can give. This is a symbolic recognition of his bravery in trying to save lives by speaking up, even when his own government tried to silence him. The medal would be made of gold and would feature his image and name. After the award ceremony, the medal would go to the Smithsonian Institution, where it would be displayed for the public to see and for researchers to study.
