# Children's Health Protection Act of 2024

This bill protects a government office that focuses specifically on how environmental pollution and hazards affect children's health. Right now, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has an Office of Children's Health Protection, but this bill makes sure it stays in place and gets properly funded. Without this bill, there's concern that the office could be eliminated or downgraded, so this legislation locks it in as a permanent part of the EPA.

The office will have a director who reports directly to the EPA administrator and is responsible for identifying environmental dangers that hurt kids more than adults—things like lead in water, air pollution near schools, or toxic chemicals in products children use. The director will work to make sure all federal environmental rules and programs actually consider how they affect children, especially in low-income and minority communities that often face worse pollution. The office will also coordinate research, help doctors and nurses understand environmental health risks to kids, create school environmental health programs, and track trends in environmental contaminants linked to childhood diseases.

To support this work, the bill provides about $7.8 million per year specifically for the office, plus an additional $13.2 million annually through 2029 for broader implementation. The bill also establishes an advisory committee of experts who will give recommendations to the EPA about protecting children from environmental hazards. This matters for families because it means there's a dedicated government office working to reduce the environmental risks that can cause asthma, lead poisoning, developmental problems, and other health issues in children—and it ensures that office won't disappear without Congress voting to eliminate it.
