This is a resolution expressing support for designating September 20-27, 2025, as National Estuaries Week. It's not a law that changes anything—rather, it's a statement of support from the House of Representatives to raise awareness about why estuaries matter.

Estuaries are areas where rivers meet the ocean, and they're incredibly important economically and environmentally. Despite covering only 13% of the continental U.S. land area, estuaries are home to nearly 40% of the population and generate about half of the country's economic output. The fishing industry alone—both commercial and recreational—supports over 2.3 million jobs and generates hundreds of billions of dollars annually. More than two-thirds of the fish we catch commercially come from estuaries.

Beyond economics, estuaries provide critical natural protection. Wetlands and mangroves filter pollutants from water, prevent erosion, and shield coastal communities from hurricanes and flooding. For example, Florida's mangroves prevented $1.5 billion in flood damage during Hurricane Maria, and salt marshes in New Jersey reduce annual flood losses by 16% compared to areas without them. However, the country has lost over half its original wetlands, and many estuaries are degrading due to pollution, harmful algal blooms, and other threats.

The resolution calls for increased public awareness about protecting and restoring these vital ecosystems. It acknowledges the work of organizations involved in conservation efforts and expresses the House's commitment to continuing efforts to understand, protect, and restore America's estuaries.
