# Care for COFA Veterans Act

This bill extends healthcare and benefits to veterans from three Pacific island nations—the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau—who served in the U.S. military. These countries have a special relationship with the United States called the Compact of Free Association, which allows their citizens to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. However, many COFA veterans have faced barriers accessing the same VA healthcare and benefits that other American veterans receive, even though they served their country just like any other service member.

The bill aims to fix this gap by ensuring COFA veterans can access Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare, disability compensation, and other veteran services on equal footing with veterans from the United States. This means a veteran from the Marshall Islands who served in the Army would be able to go to a VA hospital for treatment, receive disability payments if they were injured in service, and access mental health services and other support programs—benefits they may have struggled to get before. The legislation recognizes that these individuals made the same sacrifices as other American service members and deserve the same support when they return home.

For COFA veterans and their families, this change could be life-changing. Many have had to navigate confusing eligibility rules or been turned away from VA facilities. This bill removes those obstacles and provides clarity that their service is recognized and valued. It's particularly important for veterans dealing with service-related injuries, PTSD, or other health conditions who need ongoing care.
