The Campus Accountability and Safety Act makes several changes to how colleges and universities handle sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and stalking on campus. The bill requires schools to be more transparent about these incidents and how they handle them.

One major change involves reporting requirements. Schools must now publish detailed annual reports that break down sexual assault cases involving students—including how many were reported to Title IX coordinators, how many went through the disciplinary process, and what punishments were given. This information must be easily accessible on college websites and available in multiple languages. The bill also requires the federal government to create a searchable public website where students and families can see which colleges are under investigation for Title IX violations and what the outcomes were.

The bill also focuses on supporting survivors. Every college must designate at least one "sexual and interpersonal violence specialist"—a trained staff member who is separate from the Title IX office and disciplinary process. Students can report incidents to this specialist confidentially, and the specialist won't be required to immediately report to authorities unless the student wants them to. These specialists must receive special training in trauma-informed approaches and victim advocacy. Additionally, colleges must work with local law enforcement and get a student's informed consent before sharing information about alleged crimes, while making clear that these are serious crimes that may be reported to police.
