It also improves the physical infrastructure that detects tsunamis, like seismic stations and water level gauges, and requires better data sharing so scientists can use information to improve forecasting. The bill creates new positions called Tsunami Warning Coordinators at warning centers to work directly with communities. It also funds research into how people respond to tsunami warnings and whether current alert systems actually get people to evacuate safely. Additionally, the bill requires comprehensive studies on how well the government coordinates tsunami preparedness across different agencies and communities, with special focus on major earthquake zones like the Cascadia Subduction Zone and Alaska's subduction zones. The bill authorizes $35 million per year through 2031 to support these programs, with at least 27% going to hazard mitigation and 8% to research.
